Hernia

A hernia is a condition in which an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak area of muscle or connective tissue. Surgical treatment of hernias is typically recommended when the hernia is causing symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or when it has a risk of becoming strangulated (when the blood supply is cut off).

Surgical treatments for hernia

The most common surgical procedure for hernias is a hernia repair, also known as herniorrhaphy. Dr Lorenzo typically performs this procedure using laparoscopic techniques i.e. using small incisions. Dr Lorenzo will push the protruding organ or tissue back into its correct position and repair the weakened area of muscle or connective tissue to prevent the hernia from recurring.

A laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light on the end, is inserted through one of the incisions and the surgeon uses it to see inside the body and repair the hernia. The recovery time for laparoscopic hernia repair is typically shorter and less painful than open hernia repair.

Another surgical option for hernias is the use of a mesh. A mesh is a piece of material that is used to reinforce the weakened area of muscle or connective tissue, thus preventing the hernia from recurring.

Hernia surgery is a safe and effective procedure with a very high success rate. However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks such as infection, bleeding, and complications related to anaesthesia. Dr Lorenzo will be able to advise you on the specific risks and benefits of the procedure.

Expectations

The outcome of surgical treatment varies and depends on various factors such as the stage and location of the cancer, the overall health of the patient and the expertise of the surgical team.

Recovery from surgery can take several weeks or even months, depending on the extent of the surgery. Pain and discomfort are common after the surgery, and patients will likely need to follow a special diet to help the healing process. They will also need to have regular follow-up appointments with Dr Lorenzo to monitor their recovery.
